Back to School: Orientation Week

Welcome back students! And for many of you, welcome to SIM!

The fall semester kicked off with SIM Orientation; a week filled with welcome events and activities designed to introduce new students to Dalhousie and the SIM community. The students were welcomed to a breakfast mixer, went on a campus tour, attended the annual Dalhousie Libraries Summer Shine, and networked at the Professional Organizations and Associations Fair. The week concluded with a SIM social at the Oxford Taproom which saw a great turnout, and many slices of pizza eaten!

SIMSA has exciting programming planned for the upcoming year. We are currently ordering SIM apparel, which is also available to faculty, staff, and alumni. We have an updated constitution with reformed chair positions and roles. We are working in conjunction with other societies in the Faculty of Management to put on exciting joint events like an international fair and a book club. SIMSA is also working closely with SIM to plan a fall event for both students and faculty. With October around the corner, there are sure to be many spooky events lined up. Stay tuned…

Below is a picture from the Halifax City Walk, an orientation event led by SIMSA’s Non-Academic Chair, Janine. Is there a lovelier way to end a walk in Halifax than in the Public Gardens? Perhaps a stop at Dairy Bar!

Association Display: Slides

We know that yesterday’s Association Display was overwhelming (so many associations!) so we’re here to make it a little easier for you. Here is the slideshow presentation: Association Display Presentation

Both APLA and ARMA graciously left us some swag material, which can be found on the table in the SIM common room. If you didn’t get a chance to join either association yesterday, you can join online:

  • APLA is free for students to join. You can sign-up here.
  • ARMA has a lower fee than usual for students. You can sign-up here.

Hey friends!!

It’s been a busy week full of introductions, overviews, and information overload. Here’s a list of items we went over during orientation in order to add some structure to the chaos that probably is your brain right now:

  • Here’s the Tips n’ Tricks presentation.
  • A link to the list of Lindsay McNiff’s Academic Support Series sessions being offered this year, and a link to the sign up form.
  • A link to Robert Wooden’s Professional & Personal Development sessions which you sign up for using myCareer via myDal.
  • Associations and their available positions can be viewed through the Associations tab.
  • If you haven’t yet, add one (or all) of the SIMSA exec to Facebook so that we can add you to the closed MLIS Facebook group!
  • Follow our various social media accounts (links to the right) to stay updated on SIMSA happenings throughout the year.
  • Before your SIM Common Room access can be granted, you need to set your PIN: After picking up your DalCard, log in to the DalCard online system using your NetID and password (if you do not have a NetID, you must create one here). Once your PIN is set, contact Kim Humes (sim@dal.ca) to complete your access.
  • Return your Address forms to Kim Humes by September 15th – the form is in your mailbox in the SIM common room.
  • Return your nametags to the pink box in the SIM lobby, please.
  • Check out this interactive campus map if you’re having trouble finding a building or service.
  • And finally, don’t forget to attend the SIMSA Annual General Meeting  on September 18th where we will be filling positions on various committees. There’s gonna be food!

We hope that orientation has been an informative, fun, and overall invigorating experience for all of you. We look forward to chatting, helping, complaining, and learning with all of you in the coming year 🙂

E-Mail Buddies

Summer is around the corner, and you know what that means: 30 new students have been accepted into the Dalhousie MLIS program next fall. If you are a current SIM student, then you’ll remember being paired with an e-mail buddy before launching into the (somewhat overwhelming) orientation week in September.

Please consider volunteering a few moments of your time to help an incoming student and participate in the e-mail buddy program this year. You can volunteer by contacting SIMSA here, tweet to @DalSIMSA, or find us on Facebook.
